The equipment and support we need:

4x4s

4x402

Drilling Rigs

There are several options available to us. These are (in order of preference:

a) NGO / UN 2nd hand vehicles bought in Sierra Leone

b) 2nd hand 4x4s from the UK

c) MOD 2nd hand vehicles from the UK

The budget will depend on the source and cost of the vehicles, the most expensive option is shown as a budget figure below.

We are looking for funders or sponsors of these vehicles

Fundraising target: £16,000

Consallen Rig - Drawing

Again, there are several options available to us. These are (in order of preference):

a) 2nd hand rigs bought in UK

b) New Consallen rigs

It is vital that the rigs are robust, reliable and most importantly of all manufactured using universally available, common, simple, replaceable components. The people of SL are highly self sufficient when it comes to mechanical engineering but they need a tried and tested starting point. We are looking for funders or sponsors for these rigs

Fundraising target: £14,000 per new rig

Shipping

Shipping02

We are researching the best means to transport the rigs (and probably 4x4s) to Sierra Leone. The obvious method is shipping container. We need your help to transport the kit to the Sierra Leone crews who are waiting to start providing water for their communities and a livelihood for themselves and their families. We are looking for funders or sponsors for this provision

Fundraising target: £5,000

Materials and Maintenance

Crate02

In order to provide effective water sources we must not only drill the bore-holes but also sleeve them to prevent degradation of the bore-hole sides and to provide protection against contamination from above. Once the bore-hole is drilled and sleeved it is capped off, the pump fixed to the sleeve and then a concrete slab made to cover the area around the bore-hole, again to prevent contamination. We are looking for sponsors to fund or provide these materials

Fundraising target: £1,000

Pumps

hand pump BW

Consallen pumps are the pumps of choice for Africa. The pumps are well-made, robust and most importantly comprise standard parts that are available all around the world - cheaply. This is essential for maintenance and longevity.

We are looking for funds or sponsors to buy the pumps and pump kits that we need for phase one

Fundraising target: £3,000

Provisions

Provisions02

Whilst in-country the phase one crew will be relying mostly on foodstuffs brought from the UK in the form of dried foods etc. The reason? There is not sufficient food to go around in Sierra Leone as it is without the generosity of the Sierra Leonians leading to our crew eating scarce resources. Once the menus and supply lists are drawn up we will be looking for funders or sponsors

Fundraising target: £500

Spare Parts

Spare parts03

Depending on the vehicles we decide to use we will require spares such as tyres and filters and essential 4x4 spares as well as spares kits for the drilling rigs and the pump kits. We are hoping to find funders or sponsors who will help us with  this equipment

Fundraising target: £3,000

Medical Equipment

Medical Equipment

We will ensure that we have the most effective and efficient medical supplies available for our phase one crew so that all eventualities are catered for. We will be following guidance not only from Wherever the Need but also the WHO and other travel and medical experts. We are looking for funders or sponsors for this equipment

Fundraising target: £500

Camping Equipment

Camping equipment

In order to be self-sufficient we wish to have camping equipment for all the phase one crew. Whilst the Sierra Leonians legendary hospitality will be welcome, we will also require the independence to travel freely from community to community. We are hoping to find funders or sponsors for this equipment

Fundraising target: £500

Transport

Globe02

The cost of transport includes air fares and diesel for the trip from Freetown to the Pujehun District. We need to raise funds to cover these costs

Fundraising target: £3,000

Import Duties and Taxes

Import taxes

Just as with any shipping there are import duties and port taxes to pay. We have expert advise on hand from Wherever the Need and from commercial shipping companies that our trustees have contact with. The cost can vary from time to time and depending on the shippers, the arrival dates etc. These duties are paid in cash at the point of release of the shipping containers

Fundraising target: £2,500

Local Support

SL currency

We require support from Wherever the Need’s man in Sierra Leone in order to ensure that we can bring the equipment out of the docks safely and without unnecessary expense and the minimum requirement in terms of taxes etc. We will also require a ‘fixer’ on the ground to enable contact with local chieftains and local officials. Having someone who can expidite arrangements efficiently will be key to achieving the maximum possible number of boreholes and pump installations possible

Fundraising target: £1,000
