Pujehun District is the area that Alive & Well operate in. This region is home to some of the most desperate communities in West Africa. South East of the district capital Bo the area has some of the worst statistics for water borne disease and safe water distribution in Sierra Leone.

The charity ‘Wherever the Need’ has developed a strong link with local regional and local leaders which enables us to support their work by providing the 4x4s and rigs that local people need to become self sufficient in boring water wells for themselves.

Only a fraction of the areas communities have been helped so far.

Few would argue that water is the most important commodity of all. Many charities provide assistance to ensure that this need is satisfied in as many places in the world as funds allow, but sometimes places are missed. Pockets of humanity struggle to exist because the eye of charitable focus has not yet turned on them, and whilst they wait the survival rates of children are dramatically diminished and lives can be lost simply and conclusively because a basic lack of clean drinking water.

The other tragedy of Sierra Leone is its fertility. This beautiful, fertile country could feed itself several times over with the right infrastructure, expertise and investment. It once was a net exporter of food to other African countries. imagine what it would be capable of if it had the wherewithal to grow its crops efficiently. As it is this country cannot feed itself and until it’s people have access to clean, safe water there will be no progress. Sierra Leone has a long journey ahead but it has to start now...
