WATER IS EVERYTHING It’s a very obvious statement but clean water is the most basic requirement for human life. Very little can happen in a community without it. Collecting water from distance sources can occupy a whole village community for an entire day, every day, leaving little time or energy for much else (see statistics below). Contaminated, or insufficient, water can cause illness – the most common, diarrhea can lead to malnutrition and children, the elderly and the infirm die. In a typical community of 1500 inhabitants 1 child dies every 2 weeks from diarrhea and bad water related illnesses. Wells and pumps are the most basic facilities that can be provided to a community and they can have a huge impact, they save lives and provide a future.Clean water reduces illness and infection and dramatically improves infant mortality rates, wells and pumps allow a community to develop a wider infrastructure. With such basics in place a community can take the very first steps towards a better life. WATER IN THE PUJEHUN DISTRICT The area has some of the worst statistics for water borne disease and safe water distribution not only in Sierra Leone but in West Africa. The civil war, which ended 10 years ago devastated the country. The death in that conflict of so many skilled people has left Communities unable to undertake the basics to build their way out of poverty. They have had to start from scratch. Those pumps that they had were looted or destroyed. Starting from a base of nothing makes it particularly difficult for people to lift themselves out of poverty. That’s where we are targeting our help - with your help. |
